Curly Hair Course for Hairdressers: Which Curly Hair Training Fits You?

AfroCurls Pro 2025 practical training workshop in Hamburg

Are you a hairdresser looking for a curly hair course or curly hair training? Maybe you want to learn to cut curly hair from scratch. Or you already cut curls and want to feel just as confident with tightly curled and coily hair.

The need is real. According to ZDFheute, Germany has only a handful of training options for hairdressers working with Afro-textured hair, even though more than a million people there potentially have it.

And not every curl class teaches the same thing. Some focus on waves and looser curls. Others specialise in Afro styling, Silk Press, braiding or barbering. And some teach haircuts for natural texture, including tight Type 4 coils.

I'm Sandra, a German Master Hairdresser and Curly Hair Specialist. I've trained with educators including Rëzo Academy and Michelle Garande, and today I teach my own Afrocurls System through Babeyhair Pro. Here's a guide to help you compare courses before you book.

First, what do you actually want to learn?

Before collecting certifications, ask yourself: Do you want to cut, define, stretch, smooth or build a complete salon service around curly hair?

  • Natural curly haircuts: Shape, balance, natural fall, shrinkage and cutting decisions across waves, curls and coils.
  • Wash-and-Go styling: Cleansing, definition, product application, diffusing and finishing natural curls. A Wash-and-Go is a styling outcome, not one universal haircut.
  • Silk Press and blowouts: Stretching and smoothing textured hair. A different skill from shaping a haircut to be worn in its natural curl pattern.
  • Afro barbering: Fades, clippers and shorter shapes. Valuable skills, but not the same service as cutting longer natural coily hair.

Looking specifically for Type 4? Don't rely on the words "all curl types" alone. Ask which textures are actually cut on practice models.

Which curly hair course fits you?

  • You don't cut curls yet: Choose a seminar where you cut yourself, not one where you only watch.
  • You cut curls, but coils make you unsure: Ask specifically for hands-on work with tightly curled hair on models.
  • You own a salon: In-house training brings your whole team to the same level, right in your own salon.

Babeyhair Pro – Sandra Akim | In-salon training across Germany, DACH & UK

Focus: Natural haircuts for waves, curls and tightly curled hair, consultation, 3D shape, Wash-and-Go, drying and client coaching. The whole salon appointment connects.

I teach my Afrocurls System for waves, curls and tightly curled hair. The aim isn't to copy one haircut. It's to understand why you're making a cutting decision, so you can apply that thinking to a different head. Babeyhair Pro is a two-day in-house training for existing salon teams, combining theory and practice. On day 2 you work on models. If the team doesn't feel ready yet, we keep practising on training heads.

My background: German Master Hairdresser qualification, Certified Rëzo Stylist, education with Michelle Garande and hands-on salon experience across curl structures.

Davines – Curl with Confidence | Germany, rotating dates

Focus: Curl consultation, Curl-on-Curl cutting techniques, shape and definition. Events in Munich and Düsseldorf appeared on the 2026 German calendar. calligraphy cut – Curls / MasterClass Curls | Various German cities

Focus: Curl-specific cutting with the calligraphy-cut tool. Its seminars and masterclasses are for hairdressers learning or developing this named cutting system, and some require prior calligraphy-cut levels. 2026 listings included Bargteheide and Munich.

House of Curls Academy – Jeanete Joao | Stuttgart

Focus: Afro and coily hair, including tightly curled Type 4 textures. The academy's Silk Press and blowout masterclasses are especially relevant for working with Afro hair in stretched or smooth styles. That is a different focus from natural Wash-and-Go definition or cutting. The wider academy page mentions cutting and trimming, but the reviewed booking information does not clearly confirm a dedicated, currently bookable natural-coil haircutting class.

Wahl Barber Academy – Afro Foundations | Hamburg

Focus: Afro hair in barbering. The course covers short shapes, clipper techniques, detailing, fades and Afro styling. Practical work is centred on men's fade models. A useful distinction if you want to learn Afro barber cuts rather than longer natural curly haircuts or Wash-and-Go styling.

JONA curly hair care – Abina Ntim | Hamburg & education

Not a haircutting course. Abina is a cultural anthropologist. Her educational work with schools and teachers, along with workshops about Afro hair, helps bring greater visibility to textured hair, including in hairdressing education. We co-organised AfroCurls Pro in 2025: I taught the practical salon skills, while Abina brought her perspective from educational and awareness work.

Online learning: foundations, not hands-on cutting

L’Oréal Professionnel – Curl Keys | German-language online education

Focus: A five-episode L’Oréal ACCESS learning path about wavy, curly and coily hair, consultation and core terminology. It lists a certificate on completion of the series. This is digital foundation learning, not a hands-on haircutting class with models. Available online for German-speaking professionals.

International options worth knowing about

An international method you've seen on Instagram isn't necessarily taught in Germany. Check the actual location, language and whether the online format includes certification or is only introductory.

Rëzo Academy – USA & online

Rëzo Cut, created by Nubia Suarez, focuses on body, balance and shape. The academy offers in-person education and live online certification. Its education focuses on shaping curls through balance, movement and volume.

Official Rëzo Academy →

Cadō Academy – Canada & online

Reema Jaber developed the Cadō method, focusing on movement, shape and cascading layers. The academy offers in-person certifications and online content. Important: Its online Introduction to the Cadō Way specifically covers wavy to loose curly hair and does not provide Cadō certification. A professional certification has a different scope.

Curls Control / CC1 – Netherlands

The CC1 programme explicitly separates texture ranges: Level 1 lists 2A–3A; Levels 2 and 3 list 3A–4C. Depending on the level, techniques include working with natural fall, tension-free dry cutting and Curl-by-Curl. This is one of the more specific public Type 4 course descriptions in this guide.

Michelle Garande – London, occasional guest classes in Germany

Michelle Garande and the Garande Academy are based in London. She teaches Afro and multi-textured hairstyling. A Berlin guest course advertised for November 2026 includes coils, definition, diffusing, flat twists and other styling techniques, not a dedicated haircutting module. I've trained with Michelle myself, which is exactly why I want to describe the subject of her classes accurately.

What does a certificate actually tell you?

I have invested in education myself, so I know how much the right class can help. Just remember: a certificate alone doesn't prove that you practised Type 4 cutting on a live model.

Before booking, ask:

  1. What curl structures are included in practical work? Types 2–3, 3–4 or tighter Type 4 coils?
  2. Does the class teach cutting or styling? A Silk Press, braiding class or Afro fade is not the same thing as a natural curl haircut.
  3. Will you observe or work yourself? Look-and-Learn can be a great start. Hands-on work develops decision-making and technique.
  4. What finished style are you aiming for? Defined Wash-and-Go, combed-out Afro shape, stretched hair or something else?
  5. What does the certificate verify? Attendance, practical assessment or certification in a named method?

Looking back: AfroCurls Pro 2025 in Hamburg

A practical training moment from AfroCurls Pro 2025 in Hamburg

AfroCurls Pro 2025 in Hamburg, a look at the practical training. In 2025, I co-hosted AfroCurls Pro with Abina Ntim of JONA curly hair care. The workshop combined cultural context with consultations, professional cleansing, haircutting techniques and styling. I demonstrated on real models. With the models' permission, attendees could feel the hair textures and then practise on mannequin heads themselves.

There are currently no new AfroCurls Pro dates announced. Read how that experience helped shape my own Afrocurls System and today's Babeyhair Pro education.

Curly hair course FAQ

Can I learn to cut curly hair with no experience?

Yes. The key is a seminar where you cut yourself, not one where you only watch.

Where can I learn to cut coily and Afro hair?

There are still few options in Germany. Ask every provider which textures are actually cut in practice. Why tight coils can be easier to cut than you think, you can read here.

Is curly hair training available in-salon?

Yes, for example with Curl Education and Babeyhair Pro. The benefit: your whole team learns together, ideally with models from your own clientele.

Is an online course enough?

For the basics, yes. But you learn to cut on a real head.

One last tip: Don't book a class just because you've heard of the technique or loved the before-and-after. Book for what you want to be able to do yourself when a real client is sitting in front of you.

Editorial guide, not a ranking or independent certification audit. Course descriptions, dates, locations and content can change. Checked 13 October 2026. Always verify directly with the provider before booking.
